Professional Editing I  

This course introduces you to the fundamentals of copyediting as applied to technical communications. Learn the role of the editor, the publishing cycles for print and online documents, the levels of editing, the elements of editorial style, and the function of style manuals and project style sheets. Using the “Track Changes” feature in Microsoft Word, edit text for consistency and conciseness and write effective comments and queries for authors. Recommended prerequisite: Business Grammar Review.

Bring a USB flash drive (minimum 2 GB) to class.

Required texts: The Copyeditor's Handbook: A Guide for Book Publishing and Corporate Communications, 3rd ed. With Exercises and Answer Keys, by Amy Einsohn. and The Chicago Manual of Style: The Essential Guide for Writers, Editors, and Publishers, 16th ed., University of Chicago Press, 2010.
