This class is designed for teenagers beginning their exploration of the job market. Students will be introduced to resume writing, job searching and rules around student employment. Students will also be introduced to basic business communications methods, tools and best practices. They will also have an overview of how businesses use different tools to manage schedules, communications, documentation and reporting.
Session 1: Resume and Interview
- How to write a good resume. What to include on resume
- Researching the companies where you apply
- How to write a cover letter, why include a cover letter
- Interview tips and tricks, dress code, communication, do’s and don’ts
- Job search online, which sites, how to apply
- Teenage employee laws in WA
Session 2: Business Communication
- How to use tools like Outlook, Google for email and scheduling
- How and when to use chat tools (Such as Webex or Skype)
- Know your audience, co-workers, management, executives
- Differences between generations communication styles
- How to write effective emails for different audiences
- Ground rules to know during meetings whether you are leading or assisting
Session 3: Tools Used by Business Users Daily
- Overview of office tools (Such as Power Point, Word, or Visio.)
- Overview of how business use Excel spreadsheets
- How to use collaboration tools (Such as Google Doc or SharePoint)
Before your first class: Set up your NetID and complete “Activity and Release, Limitation of Liability and Assumption of Risk Form".
Required Form:
All teen students are required to complete the “Health Authorization and Release Form” before participating the class. Please click Health Authorization and Release Form to download the form and bring the completed form to the instructor on the first day of the class.
Follow these steps to create your NetID account if you don’t have one:
- Go to BC NetID and then click on Create Your Account.
- Enter your SID and PIN. Your PIN is your date of birth in the following six-digit format: mmddyy.
- Select the month, day, and year of your birth, and click Submit.
- Follow the instructions to validate your user name and create your password.
- Select the I agree checkbox and then click Create Account.
You will receive a confirmation that includes your Bellevue College email address.
If You Do Not Know Your SID
When you register for a class and create a student account, Bellevue College automatically issues you a system or student ID (SID) which is located on your registration receipt. If you do not know your SID you can look it up at Look Up Your Student ID (SID).
