TELOS - Discovery of the Unconscious

This course is named after the renowned 1970 history of psychoanalysis penned by Henri Ellenberger. Ellenberger’s remarkable 900 page tome traces the West’s realization that most of what we know about the mind lays hidden--like an iceberg beneath water--to the Enlightenment and its parlor tricks of hypnosis, magnetism, mysticism and magic. For this course, the instructor will elaborate upon Ellenberger’s book to frame a tour into a history of how we learned about the hidden mind. No reading required!
Candice Bradley. Ph.D. is a quantitative anthropologist with interdisciplinary degrees in the Social Relations.
