Africa - Contrast and Challenge Part I   NEW!

The evolution of Africa historically known as the “dark” continent to the current perception as a country of world interest is the focus of this course. Class topics include change and contrast of the Trekkers, Imperialists, Bantu, to the “scramble” for Africa and the partition after WWI including the earlier conflicts between Holland and England over South Africa. Some of the people and events that influenced the evolution of Africa include Cecil Rhodes and diamonds, gold and wars; Alfred Beit and The Lure of Gold; Jan Smuts and the two Boer Wars including the causes and consequences.
