Medical Billing and Coding Specialists serve as the communication liaison between physician offices, patients, and insurance companies. Medical Billing and Coding Specialists are responsible for translating and assigning universally recognized codes to patient illnesses, injuries, or medical procedures to ensure proper payment is received for physician services. Great responsibility is taken by a Medical Billing and Coding Specialist to confirm the accurate use of codes and proper filing of insurance claims to maximize reimbursement and minimize costly errors.
The Medical Billing and Coding Specialist Certificate includes theory and hands-on instruction during the comprehensive, four-month program. Students will learn ICD-9-CM and ICD-10-CM diagnosis coding guidelines and conventions, outpatient and physician office coding, and HCPCS level II index coding. Students will also learn CPT coding, with emphasis on evaluation and management coding, anesthesia coding, surgery coding, radiology coding, pathology and laboratory coding, and medicine coding. Insurance and reimbursement methodologies, including chargemaster review, interpretation of a remittance advice, and Medicare reports are also covered.
As a final element of the program, students will participate in a capstone coding simulation where mastery of competencies in front and back office duties, plus a remote coding environment will be applied via practice management software. Individuals interested in a career in the billing and coding field, those who have completed the Medical Office Assistant program, or those already in the field looking to obtain the CPC professional credential may benefit from this program. This certificate program will assist students in preparing for the American Academy of Professional Coders Certified Professional Coder (CPC) exam and the National Healthcareer Association Certified Billing and Coding Specialist (CBCS) exam. Exam fee and textbooks are additional. Textbooks are required at the first class meeting and are available at the KSU Center Bookstore.
This program focuses solely on physician office coding. This extensive program requires successful completion of the Medical Office Assistant Certificate Program or submission of assessment and resume for evaluation.
