Phlebotomy is a challenging career where you will work directly with patients and have the ability to conduct lab work. Phlebotomy is a highly specialized are of clinical practice and a phlebotomist plays a vital part in collecting quality blood samples from patients and preparing those samples for laboratory testing. Phlebotomists typically perform venipunctures, fingersticks, or heelsticks to obtain specimens and work with laboratory personnel to manage, process, and transport specimens collected from patients. In some settings, phlebotomists may perform bedside testing.
By becoming a Phlebotomist, you will work in dynamic, fast paced environments such as hospitals, physician offices, clinics, nursing homes, and labs to create a comfortable atmosphere for your patients. The Phlebotomy Technician Certificate includes theory and hands-on instruction, while also preparing you to take the National Certification Exam. Exam fee is additional. Textbook is required at the first class meeting and available at the KSU Center bookstore.
Prerequisite: Submit a completed Healthcare Program Application. Working knowledge of computers and internet access is required.

Those interested in obtaining a Patient Care Technician (CPCT) national certification may be eligible to take the national exam upon successful completion of the following certificate programs offered by KSU: Certified Nursing Assistant, EKG Technician, and Phlebotomy Technician. Experience may be substituted in lieu of a KSU Certification and will be evaluated by the testing organization on an individual basis as criteria for meeting the exam eligibility requirements.
