Spirits of The Great American West

This course has a primary focus on the The Great American West between the Mississippi River and the Great Divide from Canada to Mexico. It starts with theories of the original migrations and carries forward to the era of the great American cattle industry. It includes a look at the great and lesser personalities, events, cultures, and conflicts that opened the west to Anglo settlement. Using maps and classroom discussion, students will re-live the excitement and tragedies that made the opening of the west one of the most memorable and exciting periods in world history. Course material changes each term so feel free to take this course multiple times!
