Project Management for Business Process Analysis 15 PDUs

This is an elective course in the Project Management Certificate Program. Successful completion fulfills 15 Professional Development Units towards certificate completion or ongoing professional development.

This course discusses the need for business process analysis management for the project professional. Conducting a business process analysis before constructing automated systems is a fundamental precept of the systems design and analysis concepts upon which modern project management principles are based. It makes no sense to automate flawed business processes; the outcome is that you receive the same errors and bad information as before, only faster.

This course will provide students with a high level overview of the business process management approach. Included in the course are practical approaches to demystifying business process management, defining what a business process is, and why it is important to improve business processes before automating them. Students will learn to identify the main drivers and triggers within business processes, how business architecture plays an important role in business process management, and how business processes can be documented within a framework to facilitate project success. Students will work as teams, using case studies from actual projects to apply the techniques and practices discussed in the class.

Performance Objectives: Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to:
  • Define what a business process is and is not.
  • Relate business process management to the problem solving process.
  • Understand why automated solutions fail to deliver against expectations in the absence of business process management principles.
  • Identify the main triggers and drivers of business process management.
  • Understand how external business process experts can be used to advantage, and when they are inappropriate.
  • Relate how organizational strategy and process architecture relate to business process management and project success.
  • Apply a structured approach to business process management.
  • Apply a framework for business process analysis and management.
  • Understand the unique aspects of business process management and how it can be applied directly to project management practices and approaches.
  • Apply key tools for business process analysis and management.
Audience: Employees who work with, manage, or are a member of project teams. Successful completion of the IT Project Management Overview or Project Management Essentials course is strongly recommended prior taking this course.
