Project Leadership & Team Management 15 PDUs  

This is one of four core courses in the Project Management Certificate Program. Successful completion fulfills 15 Professional Development Units towards certificate completion or ongoing professional development.

This course builds on the basic information provided in the introductory Project Management Essentials and IT Project Management Overview courses, and delves more deeply in the specific areas of Project Team Leadership and Management. It has been said that 80% of all projects are people issues. This truism emphasizes the need for leadership, solid team building, and good management techniques in order to be a successful project manager. In this course, students will develop an understanding of the human factors of project management and people-based management skills and techniques. This comprehensive course teaches current models in team motivation and integrates the most significant concepts in team motivation and behaviors into a single set of principles. Students will develop an understanding of personality types and some of their strengths and weaknesses; human factors and team dynamics; key elements of team performance in terms of content, process and behavior; the stages of team development; how to move teams forward and facilitate success; the use of personal space and resolution of team conflicts; how to manage good and bad behaviors; and other key topics.

Performance Objectives: Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to:
  • Understand the basic personality types and how to leverage them to the project advantage.
  • Understand how to motivate a diverse workforce.
  • Facilitate team decisions.
  • Manage and resolve interpersonal conflicts.
  • Manage difficult team members.
  • Strengthen team accountability.
  • Identify the dynamics and importance of team communications.
  • Implement basic leadership techniques to form and strengthen project teams.

Audience: Employees whose work involves the planning and management of projects and other team leaders. Successful completion of the IT Project Management Overview or Project Management Essentials course is strongly recommended prior taking this course.
