Designing Successfully for the Web  

If you want to create professional, visually appealing layouts that ‘work’ on the web, this course is for you! Come discuss topics ranging from the fundamentals of design theory to the nuts and bolts of proper image, color, and typography usage. You will understand the meaning and benefits of user-centered design while encountering the key differences between designing for the web (and other on-screen media) and designing for print. Class format includes lecture, hands-on exercises, and an abundance of real world examples.

Upon completion of this course, you should be able to:
  • Discuss the fundamentals of design theory
  • Explain best practices & guidelines for designing for the web
  • Distinguish between on-screen design vs. traditional print design
  • Create grid-based layouts (developers will love you for it!)
  • Discuss screen resolution and browser variability
  • Create interactive designs
  • Optimize use of ‘white space’
  • Use varied visual formats
  • Discuss navigation techniques and terminology
  • Use the new rules of typography
  • Discuss the meaning and benefits of user-centered design
  • Test for usability
  • Use color effectively for on-screen models vs. print models
  • Design for accessibility
  • Work with web graphic formats and text based images
  • Explain how and why web designers splice images
  • Discuss Model ‘T’ format
  • Design using the methods and benefits of structured content
  • Work with bullets, borders and breadcrumbs
  • Access resources
Audience: This course is ideal for anyone, but especially graphic designers, involved in the conception, visual appeal and ease of use of web content.
