Dive, Dive! Aoogah, Aoogah!

Many popular submarine movies have been made since WWII. Not only are they enjoyable to watch (stars, plots, submarine life), but they also include great discussion topics. For example, both Run Silent, Run Deep and Crimson Tide show the "strained" relationships between the boats' Commanding and Executive Officers. Ice Station Zebra and Hunt for Red October show the complexity of the Cold War from the viewpoints of individual Americans and Soviets. What about Sean Connery's command presence as the Red October CO? Can submarines really navigate underwater canyons at high speed as the Red October did? Can they "see" and avoid underwater nets and mines as the Barracuda did in Up Periscope? Would a CO hesitate to shoot a POW troopship carrying his family as Glenn Ford did in Torpedo Run? Can a CO launch nuclear missiles by himself as in Crimson Tide? How do nuclear and diesel-electric submarines operate? Join us for the movies and the answers.
