HDR for Digital Photographers ($12 Admission to Historic Spanish Point not included)

Your eyes can see more than what your camera sensor can record. Let’s say you’re at the beach. You can see the book about surfing that you’re reading in the shade under an umbrella. You can also see a surfer out in the sun. Your camera, however, will do a poor job of recording both the book in the shade and the surfer in the sun. The solution is high dynamic range photography – HDR. You make several different exposures of a scene. Then, you use software to blend the best parts of each exposure into a single image. Our class will meet in the classroom (for demonstrations and looking at everyone’s photos) and in the field for shooting. For more information about HDR photography, go to http://www.photokaboom.com/photography/learn/tips/114_HDR.htm. Prerequisite: Computer knowledge beyond the basics. Got a question? Ask the teacher, Jim Beecher, at http://www.photokaboom.com/ask_Jim.php.

Supply List for HDR for Digital Photographers:
• Camera. A Digital SLR camera is best. However, if you have a point-and-shoot camera, it will probably work almost as well. Check to make sure you can 1) Set the camera to record RAW files instead of JPEG files; 2) Vary the exposure by using the exposure compensation feature or can shoot in Manual mode.
• Your camera manual. If you don’t have it, let me know.
• Tripod. Your camera can’t move when you’re taking several photographs of a scene, one after another.
• Memory cards. You’ll need lots of empty memory space, because 1) You’ll be taking several shots of each scene, and 2) You may be saving the photos as raw files, which are larger than JPEG files.
• Memory card reader. You can plug your camera into the computer.
