TELOS - FILM: Midsummer Night Frolics

Come celebrate the magic of summer in film: we will watch these great videos and share in a short discussion after each viewing:
  • Two versions of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream: Max Reinhardt’s 1935 version with Dick Powell, Olivia de Havilland, Mickey Rooney, Joe E. Brown and James Cagney and Peter Hall’s 1968 version with Ian Richardson, Judy Dench, Helen Mirren, Diana Rigg, and Ian Holm
  • Benjamin Britten’s opera based on the play; Ingmar Bergman’s Smiles of a Summer Night, one of his few comedies, loosely based on Shakespeare’s Dream
  • Sondheim’s A Little Night Music, based on Bergman’s Film
  • Woody Allen’s A Midsummer Sex Comedy, also based on Bergman.
  • Suggested reading, Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Bruce Bigley, Professor Emeritus of English at the University of Montana, has degrees from the University of Washington and Yale.
