The "Weimar" Saxophone
We often think of the saxophone for its jazz connotations during the early part of the 20th century, or as a "French" instrument with its memorable moments in
Bolero
and
Pictures at an Exhibition
(orchestrated by Ravel). However, the instrument has a long and often overlooked history in Germany, dating from the time of the so-called "Weimar Republic." By looking at the saxophone's usage in Germany during this era, one can begin to see a body of repertoire that offers a unique look at the instrument itself, composers that wrote for the instrument, and the political climate surrounding musicians of the time period. This lecture will include performances of repertoire from this era on a period instrument.
