Julie Otsuka was awarded the Asian American Literary Award in 2003 for her novel, “When the Emperor Was Divine”. Her story is the portrayal of a Japanese American family during the internment of WWII. USA Today called this book “a gem of a book and one of the most vivid history lessons you will ever learn.”
