Religion in the Roman World

As Roman armies conquered lands across three continents, diverse peoples were thrust together into this powerful new empire. This course will examine the beliefs and practices of Roman religion, and will then explore how these traditions merged with those from newly conquered lands in Europe, Asia, and North Africa. Case studies will focus on archaeological evidence from sites such as sacred springs in France, cult centers is Tripoli, and temples on Hadrian’s Wall and in London. We will also explore the effects of Roman religious practices on the medieval and modern worlds. Recommended reading includes: Rives, James B. 2007. Religion in the Roman Empire. Blackwell Publishing, Oxford, UK. Entire book available for purchase on Amazon.com for $31.37 (plus shipping), or partially available for free on GoogleBooks: http://books.google.com/books?id=svRVFsAP6kgC&printsec=frontcover&dq=religion+in+the+roman+empire&hl=en&ei=sKrBTeCNDabe0QHYzPC3Cg&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=1&ved=0CDYQ6AEwAA#v=onepage&q&f=false Additional PDFs or articles may be provided by the instructor.
