How to Read Poems and Ignore Scholars

The best way to read a poem is to explicate it. You read it as you do a newspaper—word by word. Just pay attention to what the words say. When what they say doesn’t make sense, blame it on the poet. Starting with “The Windhover,” we will explicate one or two poems per class. A complete list of poems to be covered will be distributed at the first class; all of them are available to download for free from the Internet. Limit: 50
