Since 2001, best-selling books on religion have spotlighted authors such as Sam Harris, Daniel Dennett, Richard Dawkins, and Christopher Hitchens. Traditional religious thinkers have not unexpectedly criticized their views, but the writers have also faced criticism from many humanists. How are these controversies related to the increasing percentage of Americans who identify as “religious Nones” or as SBNRs (spiritual but not religious)?
