The Essay: To Reach, To Attempt, To Attain    NEW!

In an environment of reciprocal respect, students will evaluate their essays and those of the other writers with an eye on the butterfly in the garden rather than "the fly in the ointment." The ethos of this course is to provide accurate encouragement, rather than merely point out the negative. As will become apparent, each writer will bring different tools to share. No hierarchy, no competition, no valuating beyond the margins need intrude on our group. We are here to share and to learn. Although criticism is essential for insight, it should be made to illuminate the essay at hand, not darken it with the shadow of the critic. About the Instructor: A native San Franciscan, Stewart Lindh received his bachelor of arts from Reed College, master of fine arts from Columbia University, and doctorate from the Ecole des Hautes Etudes in Paris, where his thesis director was Roland Barthes. A published poet and novelist, Lindh is also a feature-produced screenwriter whose drama, A Place in the Road, was judged Finalist at the 2009 Austin Film Festival.
