Bioethics in Modern Society    NEW!

Bioethics is a fascinating subfield in the discipline of Ethics. It involves itself with the study of controversial ethics brought about by advances in biology and medicine. The issues studied in bioethics affect all of us, as they have implications for our understanding of life, the definition of death, the tools available for research into diseases, etc. In many ways, our ethics and justice systems are having a hard time keeping up with the changes in technology and medicine. The purpose of this course is to promote fun, respectful, mindful and informed discussion of complex bioethical dilemmas in today’s society and how they impact each and every one of us. In each meeting, we will discuss one specific issue, with the first hour of class being devoted to discussing the technical and historical aspects of a topic (lead by the instructor) and the second hour focusing on student led discussions. In this first installment of this class, we will discuss the following six bioethical issues: Experimentation on Human Subjects, The Ethics of Randomized Clinical Trials, Human Cloning and Stem Cell Research, Euthanasia, Health Care Rationing, Genetic Choices.
