Walking the Neighborhoods: Russian Hill & Yerba Buena Gardens
This class will focus on two neighborhoods in Northern San Francisco. Russian Hill will involve a bit of gentle climbing and a couple of downhill stretches of steps. Our walk is through the heart of Bohemian San Francisco as it existed in 1900. The other neighborhood has undergone profound changes in the last few decades: Yerba Buena Gardens/SOMA. A two-hour slide lecture on Wednesday morning precedes a 3-hour walk on Friday mornings. The walks are not strenuous and will provide a coffee/restroom break except on the Russian Hill walk. Lectures (Downtown Campus): Apr. 10 and Apr. 24, 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Walks: Apr. 12 and Apr. 26, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. About the Instructor: Born and raised in rural south west Iowa, Max Kirkeberg was educated at Augustana College Ilinois and the University of Wisconsin Madison. Through a Ford Fellowship, he did two years of research in Northern Nigeria political geography, before being hired as a faculty member in SF State's Department of Geography. Max has been leading walking tours through SF State since 1972.
