An Intro to POPOS: The Psycho-Geography of San Francisco's Secret Places

It has been observed that the “character and quality of public spaces help define a city’s identity”. Over the last forty years many cities, short on public dollars, have turned to the private sector to leverage private capital investment for public benefit, creating a new category of urban space: privately owned public open space, or ‘POPOS’. San Francisco’s financial district is honeycombed with small, publicly accessible urban spaces, courtyards, plazas, rooftop gardens and atriums. The class will address the question of what these unique architectural features add to the quality of urban life in San Francisco. Adam Donovan received his BA degree from Yale University where he studied Medieval history and the art and architecture of Renaissance Italy. He pursued graduate work in the history of art at New York University’s Institute of Fine Arts and taught undergraduate courses in the art departments of Rutgers University and City College, City University of New York.
