American Indian Art, History and Culture   

This survey course will explore the rich and diverse history, art and culture of American Indians in the United States. We will begin with a timeline of historical events from a Native American perspective, and explore indigenous philosophies and beliefs, and a variety of arts including basketry, rugs, regalia, jewelry, visual arts, storytelling, traditional and contemporary music, pow wow and films. I will be drawing on more than 20 years experience working with indigenous peoples in the American West. We also will explore the historic occupation of Alcatraz Island, the protection of sacred sites and current events in Indian country. Includes field trips in the Bay Area.
