Knowledge, Mind, Freedom, Ethics: A Philosophical Exploration
Philosophy encourages us to reflect critically about what we think we know and value; it challenging us to provide good reasons for our beliefs. This course will focus on four major topics that have been of concern for philosophers ranging from ancient history up through the modern day, namely, the study of knowledge, the mind and self, free will, and ethics. We will explore a broad historical range of perspectives, allowing questions to facilitate our foray into each topic, rather than specific philosophers or movements. Philosophy is also about self-knowledge; one aim in considering these issues is for you to learn something meaningful and important about yourself in the process. Students will also be invited to prepare weekly responses, expressing agreement or disagreement with one of the views presented, and to discuss them in class for a deeper engagement with the material.
