Contemporary Interpretations of Great Classical Short Stories   

This course will focus on great short stories from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Authors represented will be from various backgrounds and cultures, but focusing primarily on European and American writers. All short stories to be discussed will be able to be downloadable from the internet so that no one will have to purchase a textbook. Two stories (to be read in advance) will be discussed during each class period. Traditional interpretations will be provided and then contrasted with more contemporary ways of analyzing each story. About the Instructor: Ralph Berets has a doctor of philosophy in Comparative Literature from The University of Michigan. He has taught interdisciplinary courses with films for over forty years. He retired from The University of Missouri-Kansas City in 2002. He has also taught at Michigan, Berkeley, Rockhurst and The Kansas City Art Institute. He has presented over 100 papers, published many articles and broadcast film reviews on National Public Radio (NPR).
