Not Your Mother's Laundry Basket! - The Art of Basketry   NEW!

This is a basketry class exploring 3-D textile techniques in 4 Sessions, each including a lecture on some aspect of historic or contemporary forms and a new hands-on technique. The contemporary Art Basket movement will be studied in terms of its ancient roots and modern vision. You will look at traditional baskets as simple as the disposable Leaf basket used by prehistoric man and as complex as Japanese bamboo baskets for the tea ceremony. We will explore coiling on a paper rush core; plaiting a vessel using paper strips; and hexagonal weave cane plaiting of hanging vase or book rest. You will be surprised with what you can achieve with simple materials and a bit of imagination. There is a $30 materials fee payable to the instructor at the first class.
