Law of American Criminal Trials
The course will explain the source and meaning of the legal rules that govern the procedures required in state and federal criminal trials and the legal rules that define what is a criminal offense and what constitutes a defense to a criminal charge. U.S. Constitutional limits that apply to criminal prosecutions will be explored. A variety of teaching methods will be used including: lecture, case method, small group activities, movies and videos. Students will participate as lawyers, witnesses, and the jury in a mock trial of State of Florida v. George Zimmerman . About the Instructor: Alan Saltzman was a Professor of Law at the University of Detroit Mercy from 1976 to 2008, teaching a variety of Criminal Law and Criminal Procedure courses. Before that he taught at the University of Nebraska and the University of Oklahoma. In 2009 he was a visiting Law Professor at USF and at Seattle University. He co-taught with Ralph Berets the OLLI Film and the Law course in 2011.
