Bridging the Gap: Basic of Special Education for Parents and Educators

Do you have a child with a special need in public schools? Are you an educator who wants to improve how you work with students with special needs? Are you a community member or worker who would like to improve how you work with families with children with special needs?

UCA Outreach is offering a Saturday training of the Basics of Special Education for Parents and Educators!

The following will be presented:
  • Information about the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act and Section 504 of the Vocational Rehabilitation Act for students with special needs.
  • Information about the terminology and language used within these acts.
  • Information about Individualized Education Plans (IEP’s).
  • Information about evaluation and re-evaluations for special education services.
  • Outlining who IEP team members are/can be—who is there to help a child with special needs.
  • Tips on advocating for children with special needs.
  • Tips on best serving children with special needs.
  • Connections with organizations that can help, including the Arkansas Disability Rights Center.
  • Time for questions—please bring questions!
  • Information on Summary of Performances and preparing children with special needs for their futures.

The training will be conducted by Mary Pearson, Ph.D. who taught students with severe disabilities for 7 years and now trains new teachers to work with students with disabilities in Arkansas at UCA and Rose Morton, M.Ed. who is the Career and Transfer Coordinator at UACCM in Morrilton with 20+ years teaching experience, 5 of those years where in special education. She is the parent of an adult son with special needs.

Representatives from the Arkansas Disability Rights Center will also be there to answer your questions about what they do for those with disabilities in Arkansas!
