History Symposium
Keynote Speaker: Dr. Allan J. Lichtman
Dr. Lichtman is Distinguished Professor of History and formerly chair of the Department of History at American University in Washington, D.C. He is the author of seven books. He has provided commentary for all major U.S. television and radio networks and many foreign broadcast companies including BBC. He has published op-ed articles in major newspapers such as the
New York Times
and
Washington Post
.
His latest book
The Keys to the White House
explains 13 historical patterns in presidential elections that Dr. Lichtman has used to correctly predict the popular vote outcome in every presidential election from 1984 to 2008. His keynote address will explain the model and apply it to the 2012 election. For his lunch address Dr. Lichtman will speak about the 1928 election when the chief issues were liquor, religion, and geography. The 1928 election pitted Herbert Hoover of Iowa against the governor of New York, Al Smith, whose running mate was Senator Joe T. Robinson of Arkansas. Dr. Lichtman has written a book about the 1928 election entitled
Prejudice and the Old Politics
.
