History & Politics of Environmental Issues in Vietnam Today

Vietnam today is faced with a number of environmental challenges, from destruction of forests, to industrial and agricultural pollution, to the effects of climate change. This lecture will explore sources of these issues in relation to the country's rapid development and political, economic, and social changes over the past half-century. It will consider changing cultural ideas of nature, environment, and development, and the various ways these challenges are being approached today. In a country not known for the tolerance of dissent, we will see how environmental issues have emerged as a key site of political conflict and debate.
