Free Speech: Recent Controversies and Underlying Principles

Bob McArthur will review the legal and conceptual framework of freedom of speech, as guaranteed by the First Amendment. Along the way he will take up several recent controversies such as limits on controversial speech on college campuses, whether protests that may foment hate and violence should be legally protected, and the logic of considering corporations as persons with regard to political speech. Understanding the underlying principles of the right of free speech will be our goal.
