Trip to Sapelo Island 2019

Trip to Sapelo Island Reserve and Reynolds Mansion at Meridian, Georgia Dindy Owens has organized a two day OLLI trip to Sapelo Island and the Reynolds Mansion. This small barrier island is a unique destination along Georgia's famed "Colonial Coast." Guests leave Athens Wednesday morning, stopping for lunch on I-16 at McDonald's/Zaxby's and arrive at The Mighty 8th Air Force Museum in Pooler, Ga, outside Savannah, for an 2 hour tour. After the museum tour guests will drive on to Harris Neck Reserve National Wildlife Refuge. It contains a mixture of salt marsh, fields, oak/pine forests and six man made freshwater ponds. One distinctive characteristic of the refuge is that it's located on the grounds of a former WWII Army/Air Corp airfield. From there we will drive to Darien and check into our motel. After a brief stop at the Waterfront Wine & Gourmet (Athens owners) we will have dinner at Skipper's Fish Camp on the Darien River in the town of Darien. The second day our guests begin their day at the mainland visitor center, where they can learn about Sapelo's cultural history, coastal wildlife, and complex beach and dunes systems. After a 30-minute ferry ride (the only way to access the island), they arrive at the 11-mile-long island. Guided tours highlight the African-American community of Hog Hammock, Reynolds Mansion, Nanny Goat Beach, University of Georgia Marine Institute and a restored 1820 lighthouse. The non-refundable registration cost includes motor coach rental, fuel, parking, staff cost, museum fee, ferry fee, driver tips. A block of rooms will be available at the Quality Inn located at I-95 and the Darien exit. You must make your own reservation (a double is approximately $80.00) Across the street is a Hampton Inn and an Econo Lodge. (Complimentary breakfast is included.) Phone numbers will be provided for all three. We will leave Athens Wednesday morning, spend the night in Darien, take the ferry to Sapelo Thursday morning, and return to Athens approximately 7:30-8:00 pm Thursday evening. The cost does not include food or lodging.
