Commemorating Georgia's Role in World War I
Dr. Jackson will provide an overview of the work of the Georgia World War I Centennial Commission to commemorate the state’s extensive role in The Great War, including early isolationism, the role of African Americans, the wreck of the ship Otranto, UGA’s Moina Michael ("The Poppy Lady"), school curriculum enhancements in WWI history and memorials erected. Dr. Veatch will discuss the development of the Georgia Memorial Database, with emphasis on earlier attempts at listing Georgia deaths, particularly the official 1921 Georgia Memorial Book, which omitted African Americans. He also will review his documentation of Georgia WWI memorials, highlighting unique examples
