Geological Hazards: Living With a Restless Planet
Geologic processes have long constituted potential hazards, however they do not become significant risks unless humans get in the way. Such risks occur throughout the southeastern United States as evidenced by the widespread earthquake destruction of Charleston in 1886. This course will examine a variety of potential geological hazards, the nature of the geologic processes producing hazards, risks involved, potential prediction of hazards, and the possibility of risk prevention and methods of hazard mitigation. Each class will include a "hands-on" laboratory session that will feature maps, satellite images, and representative geologic specimens. Related documentary DVDs also will be viewed.
