Mining the Sea Floor: Glomar Challenger and Glomar Explorer

The world's ocean covers about 70% of the worlds' surface and reaches depths greater than 35,000 ft. The ocean's Abyssal Plain covers approximately 50% of earth's surface. Yet, little is known of these depths and the sea floor below them. In the 1960-70's, modern ocean studies were in their infancy. Scientific and commercial interests were keen to learn more about this unknown realm. We will look at 2 deep ocean studies of the period that caught not only the scientific community, but also the countries and in some cases, other countries' interest.
