Historic Gardens of Georgia: Savannah
Join OLLI friends on a unique trip to visit Savannah's historic houses and gardens in their full springtime beauty. Take guided walking tours of the Savannah Squares, each a garden unto itself and each the site of homes, churches, and monuments that embody the city's history. Travel to the Isle of Hope for a private tour of the grounds and gardens of Wormsloe, named by Conde Nast Traveler in 2018 "the most beautiful place in Georgia." This colonial estate built by Noble Jones, who came to Georgia with James Oglethorpe in 1733, is one of our state's most significant historic sites. Also tour the UGA Center for Research & Education at Wormsloe and the tabby ruins of Noble Jones's house and fortified walls. In addition, you will have a free day to explore Savannah on your own. You'll be staying for 4 nights at the DeSoto Savannah Hotel, in the heart of the historic district. The first evening will include a reception at the DeSoto in a room overlooking the entire historic district, followed by dinner and a talk on the early history of Savannah by Dr. Stan Deaton, Senior Historian of the Georgia Historical Society. The cost for the trip, payable to OLLI@UGA, is $501. This fee includes round-trip transportation, the tours described above, and the dinner on March 23. When this payment has been received, you will be put in contact with the group-tour representative at the DeSoto Savannah to book your room for 4 nights at the quoted rates of $834 per person (single occupancy, with full breakfast daily) or $462 per person (double occupancy, with full breakfast each day.)
