The General Test for the Graduate Record Exam (GRE®) measures verbal, quantitative, and analytical abilities related to success in graduate school. This review and preparation course is designed to familiarize you with the various aspects of the recently revised exam and present an overview of the structure of the latest version of the test. It focuses on successful techniques for both the verbal and quantitative sections of the exam.
You'll prepare for the GRE general test through content area review and practice, as well as test-taking and stress-management tips. You may be asked to complete some practice work outside of class to help improve your performance. Students will practice for the test using software from the latest revised edition of the Computer Adaptive Test. The paper test, which is less common, will also be reviewed, so you will have a better idea of which format is best for you.
The verbal review emphasizes strategies for writing the two analytical essays, and for answering the three types of verbal reasoning questions: reading comprehension, text completion, and sentence equivalence. The new test requires more active engagement with the text, and includes both traditional multiple choice and new questions that have more than one correct answer. A thorough mathematics review is presented, emphasizing the rules and formulas needed from arithmetic, geometry, algebra, and data analysis. New question formats include the use of calculators and questions that have more than one correct answer. For both sections, the new scoring, timing and formats will be explained.
