TELOS - Stendahl's The Red & The Black
NEW!
Stendhal’s great novel,
The Red and the Black
, tells the story of Julien Sorel, a young man from the French provinces, attempting to rise above his humble beginnings through talent, hard work, deception, and hypocrisy, only to be betrayed by his heart. It combines a psychological study of Julien with a sociological study of society in the Bourbon Restoration in the 1820s. It is regarded as one of the earliest psychological novels. We will read and discuss the book and watch parts of a French (subtitled) television serialization of the book. For a richer class experience, it is recommended that students obtain a copy of the book.
