Future Type: Type Design Conference & Workshop (.5 CEUs)

Typography is an art form - a balance between art and science. From the ancient craft of hand-drawn letterforms to digitally-devised identities, typeface design is a carefully practiced system of ideas, linked entirely to nuances of attributes, personality, story and audience. The "look" of an alphabet synchronizes the character and perception of message, clarity and quality of how people understand information, storytelling and the emotional translations of voice. Learn the key skills that are required, when innovating upon, and contributing to, the vast vocabulary of the geometry of thought — the world of our alphabet's design. As an internationally recognized designer, blogger, illustrator/calligrapher, Girvin began his type design legacy creating signage, books and broadsides. This experience evolved into movie logos — first: Apocalypse Now. Over forty years, Tim Girvin designed over 400 film and game titles and numerous logo and custom typefaces, from Nordstrom's identity to The Matrix, Final Fantasy and Legend of Zelda. An all-day, hands-on TYPE workshop which will begin at 10 am with a 2 hour talk given by Tim Girvin. During this presentation you will learn about Tim's history and strategy in the world of design as well as his insight into the art of the alphabet and the tools he uses. This will be followed by a demonstration of Tim's Calligraphy to Music, performed in the beautiful critique space located in the EvCC Arts & Sciences building, Whitehorse Hall. Over the lunch break you will have an opportunity to walk through the gallery exhibit which will feature calligraphy and typographic work done by Tim Girvin and the GIRVIN team over the past 30 years. The afternoon session is a time for participants to split into teams and, with the teaching and guidance of Tim and two of GIRVIN's expert type designers, experiment and create their own inspired type elements and alphabets using their own favorite pencils, pens and paper as well as tools provided.
