ONLINE: Early Sicilian Peoples - The Elymians and Phoenicians in Sicily (featuring an expert speaker in Sicily)

The Elymians remain the most mysterious of Sicily's three ancient "indigenous" peoples (Sicanians, Sicels, Elymians). By 1100 BC, the Elymians had established several cities in northwestern Sicily, among their more important settlements were Erice, Segesta and Entella. Guests will also learn about the Phoenicians who’s trading colonies in western Sicily were founded around 800 BC, which included what would become Sicily's largest city, and the most ancient port city of Palermo, known as Zis, as well as Mozia, Marsala, and Solus, the ancient hilltop city now known as Solunto. These Mediterranean traders, among other things, studied the stars, explored the seas, developed salt extraction from the sea and even invented the basis of alphabet. Concetta Spoto – After a career in architecture and design in New York and Boston, Concetta returned to her home in Palermo, Sicily and established her tour guide practice, providing cultural tours infused with her interests with history, art, archaeology, architecture, gastronomy, nature, or a blend of the above. Her walks are infused with her interests in architecture and the history of arts.
