Day Tripping with ACE - SPECIAL TRIP: Tour Powel Crosley Estate   

Powel Crosley Jr.—Industrialist, Inventor, Visionary. Powel Crosley, Jr. was known in his hometown as Cincinnatti’s Thomas Edison. He ventured into radio broadcasting with the most powerful station in the world, the 500,000-watt WLW. He owned the Cincinnati Reds baseball team, and introduced night baseball, which became an instant hit with fans. He was a brilliant inventor, producing the first auto radio in 1930, the first subcompact car in 1939 as well as 4-wheel disc brakes, the first refrigerator shelving, the fax machine in 1940, and so much more, including inventions for the war effort in WWII. His estate, called Seagate, was built as a winter home in 1929. It is a two-story, 11,000-square-foot Mediterranean mansion along Sarasota’s Bay with 21 rooms, 10 baths, and an adjacent carriage house. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.
