Voice Class: Learning the Best Way to Sing Level 1

This course is for students who wish to explore singing at a formal level, leading to understanding and improvement of breath management, tone quality, diction, tuning, stage demeanor, memorization, and other vocal performance techniques. Please bring a 1-inch binder and pencil to class. Students will also need a recording instrument, either a smartphone or a small digital or cassette recorder. There will be handouts at each session. Students will study and practice in six general areas of vocal techniques: Posture (strong, free, balanced); Respiration (all aspects of breathing to sing); Phonation (laryngeal freedom); Resonance (mouth positions, vowel placement, beauty of tone); Articulation (diction, enunciation, word clarity); and Interpretation (musical content, textual content, emotional content). Students will be expected to practice at home and perform vocal exercises and songs in class as assigned. Each class will begin with vocal/physical exercises as appropriate.
