Charcoal & Pastels for Beginners

**Students can do charcoal and/or pastel.

The dramatic, rich markings of charcoal first appeared in caves; it is known to be the oldest medium ever. Charcoal is by far the most forgiving medium for beginners, allowing students to easily learn shading, gradation, value, and blending, and it is easily erasable.
Pastels are the only dry painting medium. Pastels come either in compressed form or very creamy, and they can be applied to a variety of surfaces. Learn how to apply pastels loosely with wild expression or tightly to show the finest detail.
