Alphonse Mucha: The Spirit of Art Nouveau

The Art Nouveau Movement (French for “new art”) was an international style of art, architecture, and design that began in the late 1900s and peaked in popularity at the beginning of the 20th century (1880-1914). The style was characterized by highly stylized, flowing, curvilinear designs which were nature inspired. Alphonse Mucha: The Spirit of Art Nouveau Alphonse Mucha (1860-1939) was a Czech painter and decorative artist who became known for his distinctive romantic style. His works frequently featured beautiful young women in flowing, neoclassical robes, surrounded by lush flowers that formed halos around their heads. His paintings, posters, and advertisements are still popular today. “The Mucha Style” includes designs for jewelry, carpets, wallpaper, and theatre sets.
