Artists in the Shadows

Before the 20th century, it had been the fate of women artists to be ignored by art historians, even though they were successful in their time. In this series of PowerPoint lectures we will present images that make clear the originality and energy women have brought to western painting. We will highlight painters such as Giulia Lama, the first woman known to draw and study the male nude from a live model; Marietta Robusti, the daughter of Tintoretto who was known in her time as “LaTintoretta”; the great still-life painters Maria Van Oosterwyck and Rachel Ruysch; Lavinia Fontana, the first female painter in western Europe to reach the same level of professional acclaim as her male contemporaries. These lectures will bring many more female artists out of the shadows.
