Overcoming Barriers to Self-Knowledge and Remediating Cultural Amnesia

Everything that interferes with healthy development, whether in self-knowledge or in cultural awareness, may be called a resistance. This seminar will aim toward outgrowing, or minimizing, such resistances. How? By enriching self-knowledge and remediating cultural amnesia! We will explore parallels between what we know and do not know about world culture and history, and the ever-expanding territory of self-knowledge. Bring to class copies of the two texts we will use as perspective-enriching points of departure: Cultural Amnesia: Necessary Memories from History and the Arts, by Clive James (W.W. Norton & Company, 2007), and Tao Te Ching by Lao-tzu, An Authentic Taoist Translation by Taoist Master John Bright-Fey (Sweetwater Press, 2004).
