Watercolor Workshop: Negative Painting (not for beginners)
With negative painting, you paint the negative spaces around your design in layers. That means you start with a very light wash of color, let it dry, and then draw your design. Then you paint the next layer around the design, going just a little bit darker with your wash. You let this layer dry, draw some more, and repeat this process in layers, until your paper is full. Your original design will remain the lightest layer in the artwork, and the deepest color will be a rich background blend of all the layers.
