Artistic Rivals Series: Pablo Picasso vs. Henri Matisse

Picasso (1881-1973) revolutionized the art world at the beginning of the 20th century. His experimentation with different theories, techniques, and ideas liberated artists who had been confined by traditional expectations. With his introduction of Cubism, he initiated a new and unexplored dimension in art. That dimension was “the use of the artist’s imagination.” Consequently, his contributions changed the way art, music, literature, and architecture would be interpreted forever after. His artistic rival was Henri Matisse. Matisse (1869-1954) was a French artist, draftsman, printmaker, and sculptor. Matisse is commonly regarded, along with Pablo Picasso, as one of the artists who best helped to define the revolutionary developments in the visual arts throughout the opening decades of the 20th century. Matisse was the leader of “The Fauves” (The Wild Beasts) whose explosive works used startling, saturated, unmixed colors and broad brushstrokes to tell their stories.
