George Gershwin was a king of musical comedy in the 1920’s and 1930’s, and his songs remain a big part of what is known as the American Songbook, but his creative genius, curiosity for more, more, more, and refusal to be limited by others led him far beyond the familiar and into experiments that produced Rhapsody in Blue, Concerto in F, and one of the first American operas, Porgy and Bess.
