COLORFUL WOMEN. Three 20th- & 21st-century Female Artists. Though not always acknowledged, female artists have made great art throughout history. It is possible that women carved the first female torsos during the cave cultures of ancient Europe. During the last century, however, female artists have become better known, and with this broader recognition, a deeper appreciation has developed. This PowerPoint lecture series considers the art of three outstanding female artists with international reputations: the monumental sculptor Louise Nevelson, the lyrical abstractionist Helen Frankenthaler, and the conceptual artist Barbara Kruger. Should time permit, we will also look at the quirky photographer and film director Cindy Sherman.

Tu 4/30/2019 - 6/11/2019  This course of lectures focuses on the role played by Art, Music and Philosophy in Western culture from the Renaissance to the 20th century. It traces the origins of the mainstream styles of the three disciplines as they crystallized in the various centers of European and American culture. Aristotle placed poetic truth above a simple chronology of historical thought and events, because, to truly understand the spirit of a people, one must examine humanity in its largest sense. Such investigation does more than deepen our understanding of past human behavior; it also increases our awareness of the present, and that is the objective of these lectures.
